Drawing of the Chapel of the Old Knowles Hospital at Long Preston - S.W view by M.Coulson c. 1860
James Knowles was a native of Long Preston, who after acquiring a fortune in London founded an almshouse for the support of ten persons, together with a chapel for the reading of prayers and endowed by him with land, worth, in 1786, £49. 15s. per annum. The Hospital was rebuilt in 1859 by bequest of Rev'd Henry Kempson, donations by other parishoners and the Reserve Fund of the hospital ( - This drawing is presumed to be just before the rebuild. ) During the refurbishment of 1983 the then central chapel was converted to a house. |
