Summary of Heritage Project Meeting

in the Long Preston Village Hall


Repair of Bells

Detailed plans for this work are being finalised, and work to remove the bells for is scheduled to start in November.


Project Office

Refurbishment of the small upstairs room in the Village Hall as a Project Office is nearly complete. Thanks were given to the volunteers and various tradesmen who have given time and materials.


Walks Group

The Walks Group has started to gather information and have started research into various routes around the village.


Railway Research Group

Derek Soames, who was the last signal man to work at the Long Preston Signal Box, prior to it’s demolition in 1972, has agreed to record his memories of working at Long Preston.


Oral History Group

The Oral History Group reported that more residents have agreed to record their memories.  Recording has already started and the first four or five interviews will be shortly available to listen to on this website, with more to follow over the next few months.

Bill Mitchell,  former editor of the Dalesman, has recorded an introduction to the Oral History Project. (This can be heard on the Oral History page. )

Copy/Index/Archive Group

Work has progressed on scanning a large number of old photographs and documents which have been loaned by several residents of the village. These are being categorised, indexed, and prepared with information ready for showing on this website. The first batches can be seen on the Old Photographs gallery.


Trees Group

This group is being trained in tree surveying and will be starting with those in the churchyard and the school.


Publicity/Publications/Social Group

Plans for the publication of a Calendar of Old Photographs in the autumn are well advanced.This group has also provided excellent catering for the coffee mornings held so far, and are planning a major social event  in conjunction with several other Village Committees for early December.
